The Halloween trailer adheres the codes and conventions of the slasher horror sub genre in many ways. First of all is does this with the setting. The setting is a big house surrounded by many trees and it is a very quiet place in the woods where not many people are around. This then makes the watcher feel the sense of loneliness. Its also very misty which symbolizes cold and winter, the time of Halloween.
Looking at the lighting, the trailer is filmed in the night time which gives us a sense of fear. When the characters are filmed, the use of lighting is very low and dull. We try to see whats happening, but there is no lighting which therefore makes us feel scared and fearful as if there was light we could see everything clearly but there's not, which leaves us cliffhanging and worried about whats going to happen.
Referring to sound, the trailer uses an owl noise to start of with which represents night time as the masked person walks towards the house. Once the masked person is in the house
and starts to stab the innocent woman, there is screaming and a use of a mysterious electric piano piece playing which is very sharp and demanding. It slowly starts to fade away once the masked person kills and walks down the stairs to leave. This represents that the killing has been done and puts us in the position of the scene.
Also the use of characters are mainly young women and a child which refers to paradigm shift. The trailer uses a paradigm shift where the masked person leaves the house as a car drives past, and a person pulls of his mask saying "Micheal?'. This then turns out to be a little boy holding a huge knife which was unexpected (paradigm shift).
The use of mise en scene refers to the film tittle, Halloween. They do this by using pumpkins, Micheal's clown outfit, weapons (knife). At the beginning of the trailer, the film tittle Halloween come up with a picture of a pumpkin with a knife merged into it. This is done to symbolise that pumpkins on Halloween cause can kill. To supports my statement @1.42 the pumpkin symbolises the murderer beside the bed. Micheal's clown outfit also symbolises the fear of clowns on Halloween as they show us this @0.53.
